Coach is looking for a Holiday miracle! In August of 2016, he was diagnosed with Brucellosis. Brucellosis is a bacterial infection that attacks the vertebrae. After consideration, Coach’s adoptive family opted to return him to the rescue as they were unsure of what Brucellosis really was. Coach was taken back into rescue and luckily the foster home where he was born was able to take him back.
Coach's foster & the rescue have had many discussions with other rescues, veterinarians, & Dr Ed at Hillside Animal Hospital and it was determined that Coach should not to be euthanized. Brucellosis is rarely diagnosed and usually found in breeding facilities. The information online was scary and overwhelming, but through our thorough research, we feel strongly that the risk of transmission is very, very, very low. There are no known cases of Brucellosis and the only real way dogs can transmit the disease is through breeding. Since Coach has been neutered and we only adopt our dogs to homes where the other dogs are fixed, this will be no issue.
In short, we felt there was a chance that a loving & caring family would be willing to adopt him and we wanted to give him that chance! Coach has received treatment for his first & only symptomatic episode. He is running, playing, & snuggling with his foster family like all of the others. It is unknown whether or not he will have another episode that needs treatment. The episodes consist of stiffness and soreness in his back.
Coach has received several applications for adoption, but when potential adopters learn of his diagnosis, they immediately change their mind. If and when he would ever become symptomatic, the costs of the medications are around $200/month. The rescue has agreed to help pay for these medications as needed. Since it is not known how often he will need them, to some, it is considered a financial burden. We want to give Coach every opportunity to find his happily ever after, but we know that is going to take a special, open-minded family. We are more than happy to connect with you Dr. Ed at Hillside so he explain more about Brucellosis. Many vets would recommend for us to euthanize Coach, but Dr. Ed is one of the leading vets in the area, Coach is lucky to have him in his corner and it would be recommended that future vetting is done through Dr. Ed.
Coach is an amazing dog that loves all people, including kids, & dogs of all sizes! He is house broken & crate trained too! He is a great snuggler & TV watching kind of guy. Please consider becoming Coach’s miracle & savior! He is definitely worth it to us and we just need to find his perfect family.
